Test for the measurement of the carbonates in freshwater and seawater

Kit consists of:

1 vial of 10 ml of reagent KH

What is the carbonate hardness
Carbonate hardness (KH) is a misnomer, but by now familiar, to indicate alkalinity, which represents the capacity of water to neutralize the acids. In freshwater aquariums the ideal value of KH depends on the type of aquarium set up; in aquariums with plants typical value is between 3-5 ° KH. In seawater KH is a very important factor for the growth of corals; in reef aquariums typical values are 10-12 ° KH.

Why measure it
The carbonate hardness stabilizes the pH and represents an important carbon source for the nitrifying bacteria.

How do the test
1. Rinse the tube several times with the water to be tested.
2. Fill the tube with 5 mL of water to be tested.
3. Add 1 drop of reagent KH and shake the tube, the solution will turn blue. The number of drops necessary to make turn the solution from blue to yellow, will indicate the amount of KH-degree water. If the water in the test tube became yellow to the first drop, it means that the carbonate hardness is less than or equal to 1 ° KH.
