JBL MicroMec is a highly porous bio filter material made from sintered glass which allows the efficient biological breakdown of pollutants. It is therefore particularly good for intensive biological long-term filtering in freshwater and marine aquariums. The special conical tunnel pore structure provides beneficial cleansing micro-organisms with the best possible conditions for colonisation. Compared to rings, the greater material thickness of the irregular pellets allows different bacteria to colonise the filter in layers. Ammonium and nitrite are efficiently broken down in the outer layers, whilst the optimum conditions for the bacterial breakdown of nitrate are created in the inner section. The optimum bulk density is extremely effective even in small filters.
Rinse well under tap water to remove any dust collected during transport. Place JBL MicroMec in the filter in such a way that it is protected from unnecessary soiling by a layer of JBL Symec which can be easily cleaned at regular intervals. JBL MicroMec should be rinsed briefly under running water from time to time. For optimum results, approximately half of the JBL MicroMec should be replaced by new pellets after about 6 months.
New intensive filter material from JBL for all filters
JBL MicroMec and JBL SintoMec are the latest developments from JBL Research: the objective was a biological filter material which exceeds the effectiveness of previous materials and can be used in small filters. The capacity of existing filter materials to break down nitrates has been inadequate. The solution was found by designing the pores of the new high-quality sinter glass material with a special shape: conical tunnel pores cause a restriction in the flow of water in the filter material providing ideal colonization conditions for bacteria which decompose nitrates.
JBL MicroMec: white intensive biofilter balls, 8 to 14 mm in diameter, from high-quality sinter glass for perfect biological water filtering in freshwater and saltwater aquariums. Thanks to the shape of the balls and the small size, the balls can also be used as a substitute for a sponge in small, internal filters.
At last the aquarium keeper can use a filter material which does not waste space with unused gaps (as in the case of filter rings). The excellent breakdown of nitrogen compounds such as ammonium, toxic nitrite and algae-encouraging nitrate not only means aquarium enthusiasts can have clear water, but unpolluted water too. Instead of quoting interesting but useless facts and figures about the surface of the material, information on the package states clearly and concisely that a pack of JBL MicroMec is as effective as 8 packs of ceramic rolls.
JBL SintoMec: white intensive biofilter rings with only 5mm internal hole for greater wall strength and better filter capacity. This new filter material of sinter glass is perfectly suited to larger external filters where the water flow should on no account be impeded by small filter material.
By replacing conventional ceramic roll filter material with JBL SintoMec, the surface available for bacterial breakdown is increased five-fold.
After only a brief running time, clear improvements in the breakdown of ammonium and nitrate can be measured.
If the biofilter ring is placed in a few drops of colored liquid, the porosity of the material is clearly seen: the liquid is completely soaked up within seconds. A section through the ring shows that the colored liquid has completely penetrated the ring. This small test shows the effectiveness of the design, as liquid can only soak through the material completely if the pores are open.
