The good bacteria present in the biological filter are essential for the decomposition of waste
organic (waste feed, feces, etc. ..) contributing to the maintenance of the aquarium
good health. There are three main groups of bacteria involved in the biological decomposition:
Group 1 bacteria (bacteria Chemioeterotrofi) decompose the waste
organic toxic ammonia.
Bacteria of the group 2 (bacteria Chemioeterotrofi in particular bacteria of the genus Nitrosomonas)
decompose toxic ammonia produced by fish and bacteria in Group 1,
nitrites in highly toxic.
Bacteria of Group 3 (chemoautotrophic bacteria and in particular bacteria of the genus Nitrobacter)
decompose the highly toxic nitrite, produced by bacteria of the Group 2, relatively harmless nitrates.
The biological decomposition of organic wastes often leads to an accumulation of nitrites in your aquarium.
This is because the bacteria in Group 3 do not work so well or so quickly as those of Group 1 and 2.
Bacteria Group 3 are less responsive to changes in the levels of ammonia and nitrites and are also more
sensitive to the often lower than those of Group 1 and 2. While ammonia can be maintained alivelli safe by the bacteria of Group 2,
nitrites are not removed fast enough. This phenomenon also occurs in natural environments but, as diluted
nitrite never reach toxic levels as in the aquarium.
Nitrites are highly toxic to fish - about 10 times more toxic ammonia and 1,000 times more toxic than nitrates.
They are one of the major limiting factors for what concerns the quantity of feed and consequently, for the number of fish that your aquarium
can support. Faced with the risk of high levels of nitrite or at risk of fluctuations in their levels (due to a malfunction of the bacteria of the Group 3),
require frequent water changes.
Many products on the market aimed at improving the performance of good bacteria such as filter materials with large surface area (sintered glass),
the filtering materials with forms that improve the flow of water (spherical forms) and various organic additives. However these products are not able to prevent the accumulation of nitrite as
only promote the increase and the activity of the good bacteria but are not able to afrontare the intrenseco imbalance of supply of the bacteria of the Group 3 against those of the Group 1 and 2.
